CCCH will lead the research into cleaner energy at IPEN, says Fabio Coral

Well-defined planning and dedication of researchers are the way to leverage even more the CCCH searches, one of the most productive centers of the Institute.

The CCCH has stood out as one of the most productive Centres of IPEN. Even one of its researchers won the award for "Featured 2015". To what do you attribute that success?

Fábio-Almir Award [Oliveira Neto] is an honor for the Center. We were quite happy. I believe the good production of the CCCH is due to a combination of factors. The first one is the dedication and motivation of individual researchers. Researchers representing a young generation, well formed and that the IPEN had ability to group. Another fundamental point are good working conditions, i.e. resources, a good environment and adequate infrastructure. The final factor is that we have a well-defined goal in a modern theme and urgent for mankind. I think these are the main ingredients for the evolution of the CCCH.

The fuel cell is a reality or is it only a "promise"?

Fábio-Increasingly a reality and a necessity. Modern concepts of fuel cells provide for hybrid systems, capable of generating energy or to store, depending on the availability of resources, only reversing the sense of the electrochemical reactions involved. Issues not only of cleaner power generation and efficient, but also energy storage have maintained investments in the development of these devices around the world. Along with the spread of renewable energies, intermittent, comes the need for energy storage. This is a current theme in which the fuel cell may play important role. But perhaps the most important fact that should give a lot of visibility to the fuel cells is its entry on the market, finally!

Could you cite some examples?

Fábio-Recently, Toyota launched its first hydrogen model, the Mirai, which means Future in Japanese. Hyundai already provides a version of Tucson and Honda launched the Clarity, both the hydrogen. I think this is a very relevant, especially after the time span in which the batteries being the focus of this industry. The launch of these cars is a milestone for the community of our area.

What is being thought to CCCH in this scenario budget limitation and at that moment to rethink the IPEN?

Fábio-I think 2016 is not configured a year as difficult as 2015. This year, the centers of IPEN had more resources made available by the direction than last year. The budgetary resources have helped us a lot with the maintenance and improvement of the infrastructure of the Centre, as the bike-generator, installed recently. However, resources for research were secured with what was thought in the past three years, i.e. the external funding. Our projects have allowed enlarge our park equipment and fund the day to day our research; so we have good expectations for the next five years. At this time horizon, the CCCH has at this time horizon, the CCCH has a well-defined planning and in the future we want to be the center that will lead the research into cleaner energy at IPEN.

While we talk a bit about his career at IPEN.

Fábio-I entered the IPEN as a student of Scientific Iiniciação at 91, while studying physics at USP. I had all my training in ceramics eletro-eletrônicas the SWITCHING OFFICE, under the guidance of Dr. Reginaldo Muccillo, until the doctorate, in 2001. This was a very important and I am very grateful to my Advisor and IPEN for my training. After a postdoc very valuable at IFUSP, under the supervision of Dr. Renato garden, was approved in the contest and efetivei me on the IPEN in early 2003, to act on-at the time-fuel cell project (Procel). Since then, I have had the pleasure of participating in the process that culminated in the creation of the fuel cell Center, under the coordination of Dr. Marcelo Linardi. I was Assistant Manager since the establishment of the Centre, and with the departure of Linardi for DPDE took management in 2013. These were the main stages and the key people, which I have the privilege of being able to consider more than fellow Institute, but friends and mentors.

You are appointed as a new leadership at IPEN. Intends to take larger flights?

Fábio-I intend to ... would like to fly in the research. That's where I've been trained and more fun. Unfortunately, the coexistence with the lab has decreased, but have managed to keep the research activities thanks to help from students and staff. I understand that I will cooperate in coordinating research projects and, eventually, I can contribute with IPEN institutionally, but my preference is the research.

When your contest to entering the IPEN, you were asked about the possibility of change, which occurs with some frequency. You haven't changed, meaning that it was worth it?

Fábio-Without doubt. At the time, I said that if you could just give freedom to get the conditions to conduct research. The IPEN gives this freedom, and we're doing our part.
