Nuclear and Energy Research Institute

Science and Technology to service life

Who we are ...

Nuclear Engineering Center - Entrance

The Nuclear Engineering Center develops activities in three major areas:

- Research & Development: advising research projects as well as theoretical & experiment developments;

- Technological Services: focusing on the coordination of activities related to partnerships, agreements, projects and customer service;

- Graduate Studies and Training: focusing on technical and vocational training for the nuclear area the CEN offers programs leading to the Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees and human resource training.

Operational areas are responsible for technical activities continually pursuing excellence and seeking out the development of research and up-to-date, reliable technology services.

Both Support Quality Management and Administrative Support Management committee work in conjunction with all CEN structure and staff.

The safety committee is responsible for both physical security and safety of the zero-power research reactor, namely IPEN/MB-01.

To carry out their activities CEN has computer programs, specialized equipment and appropriate building facilities and laboratories, such as: IPEN/MB-01 (Critical Unit), Instrument Calibration Laboratory, Thermal hydraulics Laboratory, Spent Fuel Characterization Laboratory, and Nuclear Experimentation Laboratory.

Research and Development

Thanks to the expertise of our staff of researchers, technologists and engineers several research lines with direct application in design, analysis of nuclear and conventional systems engineering, power reactor safety, innovative reactors and instrumented fuel elements design have been developed over the years.

A list with some of the areas of interest which allows students to develop their master's and doctoral programs are presented below by area of expertise:

Reactor Physics

- Development of devices and instrumentation used for testing of nuclear reactor startups;
- Experiments using the  zero power research reactor IPEN/MB-01 for application in nuclear reactors designs.

Thermal Hydraulic and Accident Analysis

- Thermal and hydraulic analysis systems, cycles and components;
Computational Fluid Mechanics applied to nuclear facilities.
- Accident analysis of nuclear plants

Structural Mechanics

- Structural analysis and structural integrity evaluation of nuclear reactor components.

Nuclear Fuel Engineering

Education

The Nuclear Engineering Center (CEN), among its various areas of expertise, develops activities for the training of human resources through master's and doctoral courses, undergraduate courses and "in-company" courses.

Graduate (Masters and PhD)

CEN has a staff of researchers and technologists accredited by the Graduate IPEN program (linked to the Graduate of the University of São Paulo - USP) in Nuclear Technology concentration area - Reactors (TNR). And also offers several graduate courses in this area.

General information about the Graduate in IPEN can be obtained from the link of the Commission Page Graduate of IPEN.

Undergraduation

The Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research offers, since 2000, an elective courses of undergraduation, which are accepted in various units of the University of São Paulo

The IPEN Teaching Management is responsible for operational activities and undergraduation events at the institution. For more information access the link from the IPEN Teaching Management page.

Modular courses or "In-Company"

Another very important form of training of human resources are the "in-company" courses targeted to a specific customer demand. Highlighting the course of introducing nuclear research reactor operator (CIORP).

To see the modularization of a course with customer specific content, we request to you to contact the management of the CEN (tel. +55 11 3133-9425 or send an email to cen@ipen.br).
